'Gimmicks and Tricks' are hallmark of Legislative Democrats’ Governance

Today members of the California Senate Republican Caucus voiced strong criticism to the “budget bill junior” Legislative Democrats passed in Assembly Bill 106 (Gabriel, 2024).

“The budget process has completely eroded, and my Democratic colleagues are not taking this budget and this growing deficit as seriously as they should,” said Senator Roger Niello (R-Fair Oaks), Vice Chair of the Senate Budget Committee. “Borrowing to pay operating costs is foolish, and delays and deferrals in this budget bill are serving up false expectations. This budget bill is nothing but a bag of gimmicks.”

“Gimmicks and tricks are trademarks of Legislative Democrats as they pat themselves on the back and claim this early budget action will close a massive budget deficit,” said Senator Brian Dahle (R-Bieber). “The governor has proposed -- with a greenlight from Democrats’ leadership - to shift payroll from June 30 to July 1, and then claim a savings of $1.6 billion. It’s sad, but honestly laughable that Democrats think Californians will believe they’ve balanced the budget with this tactic.”

“Senate Republicans continue to stand ready to work with the governor and the majority party to craft a balanced budget for Californians," said Senate Minority Leader Brian W. Jones (R-San Diego). "They deserve a government that works for them, not the other way around. We have this opportunity next month to work together, so on behalf of my caucus, we are ready to collaborate and work for you.”
